What is a fanfiction?
It's usually a piece of writing someone wrote that is based off their favorite show/game/movie/book, etc.
What is a fantasy?
It's usually a daydream someone has in their heads about themselves being in their favorite show/game/movie/book, etc.
What if they came together?
The result is this.

Back in 2003, there was a rule on Fanfiction.net that stopped all Reader-Inserts and CYOAS (Choose your own adventure stories). Many (mostly fangirls) were infuriated with the new rule and were forced to flock somewhere where they could host their horribly written, and often erotic stories of the Reader being paired up with a Character in the fandom they chose to write about.
I.e. Reader / Sailor Moon
Of course most stories that were written as ReaderxAnyone were mostly female based. Or, the reader was meant to be a female, and the character they were paired up with was a male.
I used to go to Fanfiction to read stories of my favorite shows and video games. When I saw these types of stories, I was shocked. Not only were they terribly written, they recieved even more reviews from random fangirls than the normal fanfiction that were actually written rather well. I for one, was glad they removed them from FF.net.
Once they passed the rule from FF.net, all the Reader-Insert writers migrated to Mediaminer or other small and unknown fanfiction archives that were virgin from stories labeled 'CYOA'.
Then, they were shooed from Mediaminer, the major archive for anime at the time.
Now, they moved from Freedom of Speech.
And so the legacy of clean and awesome fanfiction went terribly wrong.
